In short, the world today is really messed up. It seems that nobody is good anymore and everyone (especially collectives, such as social groups: nationalists, organized religions, republicans, democrats, etc; and businesses: Apple, Shell, NestlĂ©, Nike, etc.) seem to use whatever means they can to achieve their own desires regardless of the impact on others or nature itself, though this is not a reason for getting depressed.  You see, nobody was ever born good, they were just born. They had to decide to be good (not even getting into the discussion of what “good” is) and then act on that decision… just like we must do today. And even then it was not certain that a person would become good, simply that they had “being good” as a goal.

There is a proverb: The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

From this, we can infer that those intentions did not exactly result in good actions or outcomes. Thus is life, thus is the world. Does that mean we should not even bother trying to be good anymore? Should we not always try to cultivate an ideal world for all of Earths inhabitants, human or otherwise? Isn’t that the meaning of life: to genially coexist on this, the only known habitable planet in the universe? That alone seems to be an impossible challenge if you take a look at the state of the world today.

Yet, here am I trying to put thoughts out into the ether(net) that could possibly reach another person and have a positive influence and move ever so slightly in that “good” direction.

Cleanthes once stated, as told by Seneca, that “verse give one’s meaning all the greater force.”

So in essence, this is what The Wry Stoic is about: shining the light of Stoicism through the prism of today’s world… often in verse. If this sounds like something you may like, then bookmark this site or at least come back to visit again soon.

Be good. Do better. Go vegan.
